Legislative Alert – Substance Abuse Testing Surges Overseas

A Weekly blog containing Screening News Updates and Legislative Alerts.

Marijuana Ballot Results

Voters in Oregon, Alaska and Washington, D.C. all decided to approve marijuana for recreational use. The measure passed in Guam as well. In Florida, however, supporters of medical marijuana couldn’t get the 60-percent needed to amend the state constitution.

These new laws will take time to go into effect… a minimum of 90 days for Alaska… and not until July 2015 in Oregon. D.C. is expected to start early in the new year.

Drug Tests Surge Overseas

Drug testing is almost expected by American employees these days. It’s estimated that more than 60-percent of all companies use these tests. The number is as high as 98-percent in Fortune 200 companies.

Now the trend is exploding in the United Kingdom.  The four leading companies there say drug testing in the U.K. has jumped as much as 470-percent over the last four years.

Experts say business leaders are becoming more and more aware of the risks drugs pose in the workplace.

As the numbers grow, labs say there are more requests to test for things like steroids and legal chemical alternatives that mimic the effects of illegal drugs, known as “legal highs.”

International Hiring Numbers Grow

American Express conducted a survey of mid-sized companies around the globe, and found that the vast majority plan on making significant hires over the next 6 months.

The survey was conducted in Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Germany and Mexico. The U.K. was at the top of the list with 83 percent of the mid-sized companies planning to hire staff. The lowest was Japan, but even then, 73 percent of mid-sized companies there plan to bring in more employees.

Amazon Holiday Hiring Spree

If you know someone looking for work in the good ‘ol USA, you should tell them to check out Amazon. The monster online retailer is gearing up for the holiday season by adding 80,000 seasonal positions across the country. Even better news… Amazon expects to convert thousands of these seasonal jobs into full time positions after the holiday rush.

Other companies adding seasonal workers include UPS, Macy’s, JoAnn’s Fabric, Sports Authority, Walmart, Kohl’s and even HoneyBaked Ham and Omaha Steaks.

Ban the Box News

Now, just a quick note on some new Ban the Box developments… Tucson, Arizona and St. Petersburg, Florida are the latest municipalities to join the trend. Tucson has already removed the question from its applications; the ordinance goes into effect in St. Pete on New Year’s Day.
