Holiday Help Wanted…Employers Need to be Quick but Cautious

forklift-santaTrick or Treaters haven’t even arrived, yet some preliminary numbers are already in regarding this year’s projected holiday hiring plans. The news is so-so. On the upside, employers are gearing up and plan to hire about the same number of seasonal employees as last year. On the flip side, a survey from shows the average pay for these jobs is going to be down significantly from last year.

According the eighth-annual Holiday Hiring Survey, 82% of hiring managers plan to hire seasonal workers, but their average pay rate is expected to be $15.37 per hour, that’s down from $17.50 in 2014. This may not sit too well with many seasonal hires considering the survey predicts 67% of these employees will be working the same temporary job they did last year. The number of hours they are expected to be given is also expected to drop slightly from last year.

That said, seasonal workers are a necessity for so many businesses. Some of the top employers in this category are UPS (90,000) FedEx (55,000), Wal-Mart (60,000), Kohl’s (69,000) and Toy ‘R’ Us (40,000).

It is essential that HR managers, in companies big and small, remember that hiring such incredible numbers in such a short time is NOT an excuse to skimp on your background screening process. Rushing it could end up costing you a lot more down the road.
