Taxi drivers in Quebec must now undergo mandatory criminal background checks before getting or renewing a taxi permit. The new rules went into effect for new taxi drivers in December, and on January 1 for those needing to renew. The legislation came about because a number of women came forward accusing drivers of sexual assault and harassment.
At first, taxi drivers didn’t seem to have an issue with new system-- until they tried to get those checks completed. Several drivers in Montreal say they expected the screening to take just a few days but have been told it will now take between two to five weeks. During that time, their permits will expire. They’ve been told by the mayor that there will be “zero tolerance” for those who missed the deadline. That means those drivers are sidelined until the background checks are complete.
So, how long should it take to get a background check done?
