New Screening Rules for PA Schools

Pennsylvania school districts are finding it hard to comply with more than a dozen new laws that were passed in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal. Fourteen new laws are now in effect. They require changes in four primary areas…. new training for staff, more extensive background checks for employees, additional reference checks from previous employers and new clearances for school volunteers. While no one disagrees that more controls are needed, managers from some districts say the paperwork alone is “mind-boggling.”

Background Checks On Youth Sport Volunteers

Does your child’s youth sports league conduct criminal background checks on the adults who work so closely with the young athletes? While some private clubs do, there is no across the board requirement. Lawmakers in Denver, Colorado were considering a plan that would have been the nation’s first to mandate background checks for those who work in youth sport organizations. After hours of testimony the measure failed its first committee hearing. Those who voted against it say the bill has too many gaps. Background screening providers who testified said the proposal only called for skimpy checks that would do little to keep predators out.

Nebraska Joins RIDE

On February 1st, Nebraska became the fifth state to join the “Records and Information from DMV’s for E-Verify” program… also known as RIDE. The program links E-Verify with state departments of motor vehicles and state public safety offices. This allows E-Verify to validate the authenticity of the driver’s licenses and state ID cards that employees use as identification for Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification.
