EBI Honors Employees’ Fight Against Breast Cancer by Supporting Wine, Women & Shoes

By Tricia O'Connor

We kicked off 2020 by celebrating our inaugural year of giving at EBI. Although the pandemic has tried to derail our momentum, we have been continuing our philanthropic commitments through a variety of partnerships near and dear to our hearts.

We are excited to announce registration is open for the August 23rd Wine, Women & Shoes live streaming celebration benefiting The Red Devils organization. Get more details and register here.

EBI is closely connected to The Red Devils and its mission to support breast cancer families. When one of our own team members needed assistance, The Red Devils were there. This year, because of COVID-19, we’re asking for your help to rally behind The Red Devils. Read on to find out how you can support this incredible organization through its annual Wine, Women & Shoes fundraiser.

The Red Devils were founded in 2002 by the families of two young women who passed away from breast cancer. Those families channeled their energy and compassion into caring for other less fortunate families in need of support during their breast cancer journey.

“Our mission is simple and laser focused: to improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families. We work in partnership with 31 hospitals throughout Maryland to assist families with transportation to treatment, family support needs, and medical expenses. Our support is available free of charge to anyone with breast cancer living or being treated in Maryland.” – Jan Wilson, Executive Director of The Red Devils

The Partnership

heather-garner2EBI and The Red Devils joined together through an employee named Heather Garner, who sadly lost her fight against breast cancer in 2011. During her battle, Heather connected with The Red Devils for much-needed treatment support, including meals for her family and assistance with their utility bills. Heather was very family-oriented and loved her children immensely. She had a huge heart and her smile was contagious — qualities that made her beloved by both her Red Devils friends and EBI family.

In 2019, EBI dedicated our “Happy University Learning Center” to Heather. At the start of 2020, we proudly continued her legacy by sponsoring The Red Devils Rounding Up membership campaign. When you download the Round Up app, you can donate the change from your credit and debit card purchases to help The Red Devils continue its incredible mission.

The Event

This year marks the 6th annual Wine, Women & Shoes celebration for The Red Devils. Like every nonprofit struggling to maintain its fundraising base while adhering to social distancing guidelines, The Red Devils had to pivot and adjust its event plans. “We vaulted ourselves up the learning curve in short order to transition from an in-person event for 300 to a digital platform,” says The Red Devils’ Wilson.

The typical Wine, Women & Shoes event engages 300 or more guests, mostly women, for four hours of sipping boutique wines, sampling gourmet bites, shopping an eclectic marketplace of select retailers, bidding on raffles and auctions. “WWS is our signature event and raises 50% of the funds we invest annually in patient-direct support,” explains Wilson.

This year because of COVID-19, Wine, Women & Shoes will be a digital livestreaming celebration that kicks off at 12: 30 pm EST on Sunday, August 23rd.

This glamorous website (if a website can be glamorous, this one certainly qualifies!) houses all the original in-person event components that have been implemented in the past, like auctions, raffles, wine, shoe guys, and the fashion show – which is now going to be a look book. “These have all been reformatted to work within a digital format so you or any small-group gathering can enjoy the fun from the comfort of home,” says Halle von Kessler of 8 Boxwood Lane Creative, the event production company in charge of Wine, Women & Shoes.

Most importantly, every dollar raised helps Maryland breast cancer patients and their families.

The Legacy

EBI is proud to announce our CEO, Rick Kurland, and his wife, Marti, Head of Global Design Culture at EBI, are honorary co-chairs for Wine, Women & Shoes.

EBI is also assisting The Red Devils in its Soles4Souls shoe drive by providing storage for what will be more than 2,500 pair of shoes that will be converted to cash by the pound to fund treatment support for Maryland breast cancer families.

All this comes as EBI continues our work with Just One World foundation, our corporate philanthropic effort founded by the Kurlands. Just One World foundation is a 501(c)3 that raises funds for The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, The Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai in Baltimore, and Hope for Henry Foundation.

As EBI’s year of giving continues, and countless families face new hardships that are complicated by COVID-19, we encourage you to join our efforts and support The Red Devils’ Wine, Women & Shoes fundraiser.
