VP's Son Busted for Cocaine While in Navy Should Know Better

biden-cocaineToday’s blog might come across as a bit of a rant, but sometimes the behavior of those in the public eye deserves just that.

The subject of my ire is Hunter Biden, the youngest son of Vice President Joe Biden.  It’s not news that kids of top elected officials have a harsh spotlight on them, and it’s not unheard of for them to get into trouble- even those who are fully grown and should know better.  But the trouble facing Hunter Biden could have, and should have, been avoided.

Biden, who had no previous military experience, was chosen for commission as an officer in the Navy Reserve in May of 2013.  Bravo for his desire to serve. We need people like that.  But just a month into his service, Biden, who was 43 at the time, tested positive for cocaine in a random drug test.

Was it elitism? A sense of invincibility?  A cry for help?  Whatever it was… the drug test was not a surprise!

Capt. Jack Hanzlik, the commander of Biden’s unit in Norfolk, Virginia told The New Journal that, “All sailors would be advised of the zero-tolerance policies when reporting aboard.  They would be advised of the testing practices of the organization as well.”  Hanzlik says the testing is a random process and that all sailors know they need to be ready to give a sample… maybe today, maybe tomorrow, maybe a month from now, but it’s going to happen.

Whether you are in the public sector or the private, it’s no secret that a drug test can get you fired when your workplace has a zero-tolerance policy. So, here’s the rant I promised you…

What on earth was Hunter Biden thinking? Did he think he would get special treatment because of his dad? Did he not understand that today’s drug tests are very accurate?  Did he not care about the embarrassment to him and his family when he finally did get called to take a drug test? And what about the Navy? Do we not drug test recruits before they put on the uniform?

I’ll be looking into that last one, but we may never have answers to the other questions.  Biden has not, and probably will not talk.  The Wall Street Journal broke this story and the article is full of really interesting details. Click here to take a look.  Thank you for letting me vent just a little.
