Abuse of Students is Overwhelming

school-teacher-sexual-abuseThanks to the NFL… domestic violence is the cause du jour.  The whole country has rallied around the victims of these football players.  Unfortunately, these few public cases of abuse actually pale in comparison with what is going on in our schools.

Yes… I said in our schools.  According to U.S. Senator Pat Toomey, R-Pa. “Since Jan. 1 of this year, over 325 teachers and other school employees across America have been arrested for sexual misconduct with children. That is more than one per school day.

We’ve mentioned Senator Toomey’s proposed legislation in previous blogs.  It would require recurring security checks on teachers, coaches and bus drivers.  The bill would require states that receive federal education funding to conduct the periodic background checks, but some educators say the proposed law violates their privacy.

Soon, they might be complaining about more than that. School officials say the costs of these background checks would most likely be paid by the employees.  The “Protecting Students from Sexual and Violent Predators Act” would require all employees and contractors be checked against state and federal databases, child sexual abuse and neglect registries, the FBI Fingerprint Database and the National Sex Offender Registry.  The total cost is expected to be about $40 per person each time they go through the check.

That cost will most likely come straight out of the teachers’ and employees’ pockets. So are these continuing checks necessary?  Is it reasonable to expect employees to foot the bill? We would love to hear your thoughts on this.  Send us an email at blog@ebiinc.com.
