Grocery Chain Settles FCRA Lawsuit
Publix Super Markets will pay nearly $6.8 million to settle a class action lawsuit over the way it conducts background checks.
The lawsuit accused the company of violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act by failing to have the background check authorization form in a stand-alone document. The suit also alleges Publix had language in their job applications that could cause candidates to waive some of their rights regarding the background screening.
Publix did not admit to any wrongdoing, and was not found liable… but decided to settle to avoid the “substantial expense of litigation and any disruptions to its business operations.”
After attorney’s fees, each member of the class will receive about $48.
Wal-Mart Resume Embarrassment
David Tovar… Vice President of Communications for the massive retailer… resigned recently because the company found out he lied on his resume.
The discrepancy might never have been discovered, but when Tovar applied for a promotion the company did a background search. That’s when they discovered he never received a bachelor’s degree he claimed to have.
A Deadline for Marijuana Registration Cards
Patients in Massachusetts who are already qualified to use medical marijuana have just a few months to get a new, required registration card. Up until now, doctors gave patients paper certificates, but those become invalid on February 1st, 2015.
Those with certificates will get a registration number from their doctor. They can use that number to log into the state’s system and apply online.
There is a $50 fee to register.
