Senate Bill 3245 Extends the Use of E-Verify for 3 More Years

E-VerifyOn September 18, 2012, both the House and Senate passed Senate Bill 3245 which extends the use of E-Verify until September 30, 2015.  President Obama subsequently signed the Bill on September 28, 2012.  E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Social Security Administration that allows participating employers to electronically verify the employment authorization of their newly hired employees.

The use of E-Verify is voluntary; however, several states have made it mandatory for some private companies and state agencies to use the system. The following E-Verify state compliance map provides additional information on states that have taken an active approach to mandate its use.  In addition, E-Verify is considered mandatory for certain federal contractors if the requirement is clearly stated within their federal contract.
