Workplace Stress:

Boosting Drug Abuse

According to a recent study by Anxiety Disorders Association of America, workplace stress negatively effects close to half of American employees. The result of this anxiety itself is destructive to productivity in the first place, but when it leads to elevated drug abuse and alcohol abuse on the job, it becomes downright dangerous.

The study reveals not only that millions of Americans suffer from workplace stress, but that when employees look for ways to reduce this stress they tend to threaten workplace safety. This is because 14% of employees report relying on illicit drug abuse to manage their anxiety, while a whopping 20% drink more alcohol.

So yes, up to 34% of your workers may be responding to workplace stress by drinking and using drugs. You can also bet that a large number of them are working under impaired conditions.

On a general level, this abuse then effects performance, quality of work, and interactions with co-workers and morale. This results in the loss of millions of dollars a year for American companies.

Furthermore, those who abuse drugs in the workplace are far more likely to injure themselves or someone else, and are 5 times more likely to file a workers comp claim when they do.

Of course, focusing on creating a positive workplace environment is key to boosting workplace safety and to minimizing workplace stress and anxiety. But what about the drug abuse and alcohol abuse?

This is where quality background screening comes into play; all background screening policies should implement pre-employment drug testing, random drug testing, and especially post-accident drug testing. Furthermore, drug testing should be combined with BAT services to minimize on-the-job drinking. Following through with such protocol will reveal to employers and managers who the "at risk" employees are, and allow them to make smart workplace decisions regarding employees who may be dangerous to themselves, to co-workers, or to the integrity of the company.
