Identity Theft Linked To Workplace Drug Abuse:
The Disturbing Connetion
In his recent article at Salem-News.com, police detective Paul Henninger makes a disturbing connection between drug abuse in the workplace and identity theft.
Henninger has found that "over 90%" of the persons he arrests for fraud or identity theft are involved with methamphetamine, and he believes this statement to be true on a national level.
And where are these addicts getting the personal data that they use? From American businesses: in fact, 70% of all stolen personal information comes from businesses who aren't properly protecting personal information.
And these same businesses aren't implementing background screening processes that could minimize the threat of identity theft or fraud, now including drug testing.
This new connection between identity theft and meth use only solidifies the need for pre-employment drug testing, as well as random drug testing, as part of a standard background screening process. We've always known that drug users in the workplace cost money; absenteeism, lowered productivity, injury to themselves or others, and more, contribute to the costs that drug testing can control in the workplace. Now we can add identity theft to the list.
So it comes as no surprise that Henninger's first solution to this problem is background screening. A thorough background screening program should include a criminal background check on local, state, and federal levels, pre-employment drug testing, with more tests to follow randomly, and even a credit check to look for suspicious activities such as multiple bankruptcies. These guidelines would be especially important in fields where employees have access to personal data.
Of course, a cheap background check won't cover all of these aspects of thorough screening, which is why many businesses simply get a cheap background check, and leave their clients and other employees at risk.
