Workplace Safety Starts in the Hiring Process:
Don't wait until it's to late.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, almost 6,000 employees die
every year in the workplace. Around 600 of them die due to targeted
workplace violence, at the hands of an employee who means to kill them.
That’s right, they’re murdered by another employee. Many others die
inadvertantly as a result of another employee’s mistake on the job.
Meanwhile, non-fatal injuries on the job number in the many thousands,
and together these issues pose a significant problem for employers. The
liability that is a direct result of workplace violence is only the tip
of the iceberg. There’s workers compensation claims, absenteeism, higher
turnover, low morale and more. Not to mention the psychological trauma
of losing an employee on the job.
The Federal Government links several factors to workplace bullying and
workplace violence, both of which are closely related. They often stem
from outside influences, over which the employer unfortunately has no
control. Workplace bullying especially can be the cause of stress,
unhappiness in the job environment, road rage, and even psychological
imbalance. Violence can often grow out of workplace bullying, so the
latter is often perceived as a precursor or sign of the former.
In order to control these tendencies and create a better sense of
workplace safety, the Federal Government suggests that each employer
deal with these issues as early as possible, before they can evolve into
a dangerous situation.
And, no point is earlier than the point where an employee enters the
hiring process. Managers and Supervisors, it is suggested, should
conduct thorough background screening on all potential hires, including
drug testing.
At EBI we couldn’t agree more. We know that background screening can
directly affect workplace safety, which is why we suggest pre-employment drug testing, random drug testing, and post-accident drug testing to
protect our clients. We also conduct background checks on a local,
state, and national level, and complete reference checks.
We see ourselves as the first line of defense against workplace bullying
and workplace violence – which might be why we’ve come to represent the
highest industry standards.
