Current topic:
White Collar Crime Still Epidemic:
Fraud and Identity Theft.
The latest victim of faulty background screening practices happens to be Trumbull County in Pennsylvania, where more than $600,000 was wasted by a Small Business Owner with a past history of fraud.
The man in question, Robert Moosally, got into trouble before with this specific form of white collar crime; he was convicted of bank fraud in 1985, and served 29 months in prison.
Sadly, the County of Trumbull and numerous small banks in the area had already loaned him the money when this information was discovered. At that point there was nothing to be done, and Moosally’s airport refueling and maintenance business has since gone bankrupt. The loans are in default.
Stories like this are more common than they need to be. A solid background screening process can prevent white collar crime by discovering the applicants or employees with a history of fraud, identity theft, and the like.
And by solid, we don’t mean the cheap background check that skims through a little bit of public information, we mean in-depth background screening that includes everything from a credit check, to a social security trace, to drug testing and criminal history. All of these factors effect people who have access to money and sensitive information. After all, fraud is more likely to be committed by someone who can’t pay their bills, or manage their own money.
Of course, all of these services are standard here at EBI. Here’s another reason why we are an industry leader – we stop white collar crime by keeping those employees from ever getting hired in the first place.
