Protecting Homeland Security:

Why Pre Employment Background Screening Must Include Social Security Numbers Verification

With the recent alarm regarding terrorism and trucking at the Port of Miami, pre employment background screening is in the news again. But as the trucking industry learns to deal with strict requirements for a criminal background check, homeland security won't be any better served unless in-depth social security numbers verification is included in each and every profile.

The recent incident in Miami, in which 3 men of Middle Eastern descent were arrested based on faulty information provided to port authorities, has provided us with a stark reminder of how important it is to know exactly who has access to our borders. At hamptonroads.com, the resulting plight of the trucking industry, and the numerous criminal background checks they will now need to maintain homeland security, demonstrates why it is that pre employment background screening hasn't been strictly enforced in the first place. The cost of each background check and license - and some truckers will need 3 different licenses - could be exorbitant and time consuming.

But nowhere in the article does it stress the real problem: that relying on a standard criminal background check will do very little to protect our borders or bolster homeland security. Public records are often so poorly maintained that the data can be misleading, poorly organized, or just plain incorrect. And, no cheap criminal background check is going to enforce the kind of protective measures that thorough pre employment background screening has to offer.

And a social security numbers verification is at the top of that list.

This is why we offer just this service here at EBI. Our social security trace verifies that every number is within a valid range and actually belongs to the candidate. We also check each number against the deceased records of the Social Security Administration, thus providing an added level of protection against SSN fraud.

And in terms of homeland security, EBI's Global Homeland Security Search investigates more than 14 separate U.S. and foreign sanctions and watch lists.

So while truckers struggle to pay for 3 different forms of criminal background check, perhaps it would be wiser to pay just once for a thorough background screening program that could guarantee fast, efficient, and reliable results the first time around.
