Being Your Own Private Detective:

The Worst Way To Conduct Background Screening

At The Seattle Times, the current trend in searching public records as a substitute for background screening is not considered with the seriousness it deserves. A cheap background check, or simple scan of public records, will never suffice in terms of hiring practices, since public records just can't provide the kind of information required to protect the workplace.

The article is mostly about choosing who has personal access to our homes and children, but knowing who has access to the workplace is just as important. Recent scandals with repair men and school officials, all with criminal records and all who abused innocent people, prove that knowing who you hire is easily as important as knowing who enters your home. And, more and more managers and employers are taking the cheap way out by scanning public records, or paying for a superficial background check, instead of thorough background screening.

What the article doesn't say is that being your own private detective just isn't very effective. Public records aren't well organized, and often the information you do get is confusing or just plain false.

And being your own private detective means that you're hampered by your own knowledge and experience. Would just anybody know how to check for criminal records on a local, state, national, and international level? How about a DMV records check? A credit check? Drug testing? Having this information prevents serious problems before they happen, which is the key to proper background screening. And, even if you did know how to accomplish some real background screening, would the average person know how to manage that information and choose the right person for the right job, every time?

Not likely.

This is why the "be your own private detective" idea sells managers, employers, and even regular people, short. When it really matters who you have in the workplace, home, or school, it should really matter how you screen out dangerous people. In simplest terms, theres nothing like the real thing when it comes to background screening.
