Pre-Employment Background Screening:

Background Screening Prevents Financial Losses

If we haven't yet convinced managers and business owners of the importance of background screening for potential employees, the article released by Occupational Hazards ought to do the job. After reviewing the financial trends associated with businesses who don't pursue pre-employment background screening, Occupational Hazards concludes that these businesses are at a much greater risk for employee injury and economic liability.

These findings are supported by the American Society of Safety Engineers, who claims that any employer who fails to institute background screening procedures when hiring new employees is setting themselves up for "losses" based on poor employee performance, fraud, injuries, judgments and damages and other costs.

In other words, those who don't follow through with their background screening will pay for it later.

Topping the list of background screening must-haves is employee drug testing. This includes pre-employment drug testing, random drug testing, and even post-accident drug testing. Following closely behind are criminal background checks, fingerprint checks, and credit checks.

Why so much screening? It's simple -- fingerprinting and a criminal background check speak for themselves, but potential hires who fail their employee drug testing were at a much higher risk for absenteeism, injury to themselves or others, and consequently, higher worker's comp premiums.

Meanwhile, employees who failed the credit check were more likely to commit fraud, an epidemic "white collar" crime that costs American businesses billions of dollars a year.

Occupational Hazards has recognized that America's safest companies implement all of these factors in their background screening, and more. While insufficient screening is a strong indicator that a company will report these "losses," and worse yet, are much more likely to experience a violent incident of some sort in the workplace.
