National Background Screening:

Catching More Offenders

The case of Maurice Gibbs in Barnes County, North Dakota has garnered a lot of attention regarding the failure of cheap background checks, and public criminal records, to keep dangerous people out of the workplace.

Gibbs is charged in the death of a 22-year-old student in the area. He had worked at the school for some time, and was then hired as a Barnes County jailer.

And in terms of background screening, while Gibbs was supposedly screened by a Valley City dispatcher, the screening itself only covered 4 states, was reliant upon public criminal records, and took "less than two minutes." Later it was discovered that he has been charged in the past for attempted premeditated murder. He has also been recently linked to a previously unsolved rape in Fargo.

The community is rightfully outraged. But unfortunately, it isn't surprising that a thing like this could happen. Cheap background checks are just that: cheap. They tend to rely on outdated, unorganized, or even just plain false information. The recent trend in relying on free information only makes matters worse. Public criminal records tend to be poorly maintained, but some background check companies even go so far as to rely on Google or other search engines, and even social networking sites, to provide information on the potential hire.

Thorough background screening will always take longer than "two minutes" because it includes a social security check to rule out aliases (Gibbs had recently changed his name), as well as a criminal records search on local, state, and national levels. And these services only constitute the tip of the iceberg; all potential hires should be subject to in-depth screening to examine their suitability for the job, as well as the workplace environment.

These measures, among many others, are specifically designed by experts in the field of background screening to protect employers from liability, and employees (and the public) from potentially dangerous co-workers.
