Medical Malpractice Suits
Reveal Rising Healthcare Problems

What you don't know about medical malpractice law suits

It seems impossible to believe, but in the year 2005 over 2000 patients died in hospitals as a direct result of errors made by medical staff. And worse, an estimated one million more suffered what is known as a “near miss” incident, where medical malpractice nearly killed someone or nearly caused them severe bodily harm.

Amid the recent stories of nursing home neglect, and wrongful deaths caused by poorly funded hospitals, these kinds of statistics show us the depressing reality behind the recent increase in medical malpractice suits. Problems like unnecessary falls, the administration of wrong medications, and communication errors between patients, doctors, and nurses seem to be on the rise.

But it’s no surprise at all that in the pursuit of safer hiring decisions, EBI, a leader in the background screening industry, has teamed up with Government Management Services, Inc (GMS) to provide healthcare agencies with access to the Fraud Abuse Control Information System (FACIS).

GMS was founded to assist healthcare personnel in locating information on healthcare individuals and entities that aren’t covered by federal regulations, as well as to consolidate information on those healthcare providers who have been disciplined by the State government licensing board. This is important because a lot of nursing home neglect and wrongful deaths occur in places that aren’t part of a federal healthcare program.

FACIS, the database that was created for GMS, will make possible a nationwide search that includes physicians, nurses, mental health professionals and even pharmacists. EBI’s background screening will also include hospitals, clinics, managed care, and more.

Things like nursing home neglect and wrongful death never needs to happen – and clearly EBI is committed to making the healthcare industry a safer place.
