Identity Theft:
How Poor Quality Background Checks Are Putting You At Risk
While background screening services are becoming more and more popular in the business
world, errors are becoming more and more common. In the most recent headlines, would-be employees are often shocked to find
that they couldn’t get the job they wanted because of a long list of criminal activity that was mistakenly attributed to them.
So why is this so important? Because, in those same headlines each would-be employee has been urged to sue. According to
consumer right’s advocates, if "defamation" on the part of a background screening company leads someone to lose a job, you
could be liable.
There are two ways that you can be at risk for this kind of lawsuit. First, you can pay for a cheap internet background
check and get faulty information, which is easy in a field where there are no real industry standards. And second, that
cheap background check can turn up false information based on someone’s identity theft.
Think it can’t happen to you? Well, today’s recent studies show that 85% of identity theft victims don’t discover what has
happened to them until they fail to get a job or credit card. And, with 13 people suffering from identity theft every
minute(!) in this country, your odds of finding false information with a cheap background check are actually very high.
If a would-be employee discovers that your faulty background check led them to lose a job, they can sue you for not meeting
federal background screening guidelines.
So how do you protect yourself? Work with a reputable firm that does thorough and concise
background screening. At EBI this kind of disaster is prevented because EBI incorporates
a social security number trace and verification for your applicants. This ensures that a
social security number trace actually
works and that that SSN really belongs to your client--it’s checked against records of the deceased, aliases, maiden names,
and more.
Thus, if a disgruntled would-be employee wants to see their
pre-employment background screening, you can rest assured that you’ve followed all the rules.
By following these guidelines, as mandated by law, EBI can help you to protect yourself, your company, and would-be employees
from the dangers of identity theft.
