The Holidays:
Bringing Out Identity Theft and Fraud
'Tis the season for identity theft and business fraud; as holiday shopping gets into full swing, those individuals who would steal from their employer find both motive and opportunity coming their way.
The opportunity comes from the personal information, data, and plain cash that floods the market from now until early spring. Identity theft prevention experts warn that 30% of your employees will steal from you, but another 30% would do so under the right conditions. As the need for holiday cash meets the wealth of identity theft opportunities out there, employers face a much higher likelihood of business fraud.
And fraud is a fast growing enterprise. The average bank robbery today only nets about $250 dollars, but the average high-tech or white collar crime nets $50,000 or more. Employee fraud alone costs businesses $400 billion a year in losses.
So what can business owners and managers do to foster identity theft prevention in the face of such a crisis?
First and foremost, don't hire thieves.
This may seem to be easier said than done, but realistically any quality background screening program should offer the tools that will prevent identity theft, among other crimes, in the workplace.
The Red Cross made waves recently when they mandated a credit check option for their employees, but they're on the right track. A credit check instituted as part of background screening policies can reveal whether or not a potential hire has been through multiple bankruptcies or similar money troubles. These individuals are more likely to steal from their employer, especially during the holiday months.
Of course, a social security check and criminal background check should also be instituted to reveal whether or not a history of such behavior could threaten the workplace.
Each of these factors, when constituting a holistic approach to identity theft prevention, establishes the importance of quality background screening procedures to protect not just the workplace, but clients and co-workers as well.
