The Hair Follicle Drug Test:
The New Standard in Drug Screening Practices
Many employers don't implement drug testing in the workplace because they feel that common drug screening procedures, particularly the urine drug test, are both invasive and demeaning for employees.
However, even those employers that do rely on the urine testing may have been getting false results anyway. Sure, the urine drug test has been the standard method of conducting pre-employment drug screening for a long time; it's cheap, it's quick, and it has 20 years of research to back it up. However, the it also has a notoriously short window for detecting drug use, meaning that it's easy for pre-employment hires to stay sober long enough to pass one. And, with the many products out there designed to help drug users to "fool" the urine drug test, it just isn't the most reliable way to implement drug testing in the workplace anymore.
So what is? The hair follicle drug test is quickly becoming the favorite of Fortune 500 companies, schools, and even casinos. Compared to urine testing, the hair follicle drug test is much less invasive. It only requires about 40 strands from the back of the head for adequate testing, and for employees who are bald, body hair can be used.
Hair follicle drug testing also has a much wider window for drug abuse, and it's more precise.
As a result, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has proposed new rules, in the final state of revision, that are likely to make hair the prime specimen for drug testing.
The most thorough background screening services should take their cue from these findings, which is why here at EBI we offer a hair follicle drug test, in conjunction with a urine drug test and oral saliva drug testing.
Drug use in the workplace provides too great a liability to be ignored, and by following cutting edge science in the pursuit of uncovering drug abuse, EBI provides the kind of background screening that has made us a leader in the industry.
