Employee Drug Testing:

It has to be thorough to be effective.
How drug abuse is still a problem in the workplace.

According to the Denver Business Journal, drug counselors, human resource experts and lawyers have all come to the conclusion that substance abuse (specifically methamphetamine abuse) is a continuing detriment to workplace safety, and employee drug testing is the only way to stop it.

But in order to be truly effective, employers can't rely on basic, pre-employment drug testing. After all, these days many employers offer employee drug testing as a background screening component. And still, 73% of drug users are gainfully employed. What matters as much, if not more, in the prevention of drug use on the job is the random drug testing that most policies allow based on "reasonable suspicion."

Workers who suffer from substance abuse problems are more likely to miss work, perform at a lower level, and often exhibit other behaviors that insinuate a drug problem. Methamphetamine abuse in particular leads to erratic and sometimes paranoid behavior. Random drug testing should be implemented, as a function of background screening, to make sure that these individuals aren't abusing drugs at work.

And such action should make sense to employers and employees alike, since those who use drugs at work are more likely to hurt themselves or others, and also more likely to file a worker's compensation claim when they do so. This is why post-accident drug testing is also important; to ensure that all on the job injuries are truly accidental.

Employees who fail drug testing may be costly to replace, but as most employers discover, keeping employees with substance abuse problems on the job leads to injury, accidents, higher insurance rates, poor quality of productivity, and absenteeism.

The Denver Business Journal makes it clear that productivity and safety on the job are worth the cost of a thorough background screening program that follows basic pre-employment drug screening with random drug testing and post-accident testing. And here at EBI we provide all of the above services with the knowledge that professional background screening protects employers and employees alike.
