OSHA Regulations:
Easier to Meet With Drug Testing and Employment Background Screening
OSHA regulations have become a hot topic of discussion since Thomas Industrial Coatings was penalized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to the tune of $2.4 million dollars. This sum was the result of an investigation of 3 deaths in 5 months, all Thomas Industrial employees who lost their lives earlier this year.
Ensuring that quality employees will maintain compliance with OSHA regulations is just one factor in the occupation healthcare solutions that should be a part of every employment background screening program. In this case, Thomas Industrial has been cited for safety violations like scaffolding that lacked safe access and lack of a competent supervisor to oversee work.
But in many, many cases limiting workplace accidents comes down to this: employee drug testing.
Employee drug testing has been proven to minimize on-the-job accidents and fatalities, especially in physically demanding jobs like construction, trucking, and even commercial fishing. These are also, by the way, the three most dangerous fields of work in America.
And this isn't a minor problem, either. There are around 26 million people in the workplace who are legally impaired every day. This may sound extreme but it's true; 40% of individuals classified as drug addicts or alcoholics are still getting hired by perfectly respectable companies.
These employees go on to accrue costs in lost productivity, absenteeism, destruction of property, injury to themselves, and injury to others. Adding in workers comp claims, drug use on-the-job costs American businesses billions of dollars a year.
And, as Thomas Industrial knows, those costs are nothing compared to kind of fines that you can suffer for failing in compliance to OSHA regulations.
The key to a good employment background screening program is to follow-up standard employee drug testing with random drug testing, and especially post-accident drug testing.
This is why our drug-free workplace initiative is the best in the business. We provide all of the above, tailoring our programs to suit the needs of our clients, and providing results in fast and efficient formats designed to make the trauma of a workplace accident as easy to deal with as possible.
There's nothing worse than accidents such as those that occurred this year to Thomas Industrial Coatings and their employees, except when workplace accidents could have been prevented.
