Drug Testing

The New Epidemic of Methamphetamine Drug Abuse

There's been a lot of talk in the media lately about the methamphetamine epidemic effecting a variety of workplaces and rightly so. It’s easy to see why, when positive employee drug testing for methamphetamine, also known as meth, surged 68 percent in 2003. The National Association of Counties has revealed that in the realm of drug abuse and drug addiction, over half of all counties nationwide (58% in fact) see meth as their number one problem.

So what exactly is meth? Methamphetamine is part of a larger class of drugs known as amphetamines, sometimes referred to as uppers or speed, that create a sense of euphoria and energy in the user. All amphetamines are addictive, and meth is clearly one of the worst.

Methamphetamine use has exploded for several reasons, including the ease of its manufacture, since it's made in home labs with nothing more than over-the-counter drugs and ingredients. This makes meth easy to make, easy to find, and harder to kick, even with specific methamphetamine treatment. Scary news, in light of the fact that according to the Department of Health and Human Services 12.3 million adults have used meth.

So how does this effect you and your workplace?

Meth use, after a certain period of time that varies for each addict, leads users to exhibit uncontrollable mood swings, aggression, anxiety, and paranoia. This really ups the odds for a sudden incident of workplace violence--to say nothing of the lost productivity and absenteeism of users. In one state alone that looked to measure the effects on business, methamphetamine and amphetamine use cost $21 million in corporate loss.

Want to help keep this epidemic from reaching your company? Employee drug testing. The incidence of meth and speed use in the workplace seems to have slowed a little since more sophisticated drug testing has been instituted to control it. For you, this means that the quick, cheap testing kit isn’t such a good idea.

EBI can help you setup, arrange and schedule preliminary employee drug testing, as well as random drug testing thereafter that will help you to avoid the meth epidemic. EBI works hand-in-hand with the three largest accredited laboratories in the nation so you can count on fast, accurate results, and they can be integrated into the rest of your background screening program.
