Data Brokers Offering
Cheap Background Checks:

Selling Employers Short

Hewlett-Packard's recent information scandal, in which questionable data brokers were hired to provide information on an in-house leak, has brought to light the danger of relying on such individuals for pre-employment background screening.

A data broker is nothing more than an unlicensed private investigator, and many of them are offering cheap background checks to employers and managers who think they can save money and forgo in-depth background screening.

This, however, is a gamble that will never really pay off.

Data brokers charge very little for their services, but their methods of obtaining information don't provide adequate returns. Many of them simply troll the Internet for information, picking up something here or there and passing it off as vital information. In such cases, it's difficult to know if a criminal background check has been conducted, if the records checked were up to date, or even if the information provided belongs to the correct person.

And, those brokers who provide personal information like phone numbers, cell numbers, and more, aren't always doing so legally, which explains why HP is in such hot water these days. Relying on data brokers instead of in-depth background screening is an invitation to false information, and even liability.

These kinds of problems stem from the unprofessional nature of the data broker – someone who knows their way around the Internet shouldn't necessarily be in charge of something as delicate and important as the background screening of a potential hire.

Real background screening is thorough, reliable, and most of all, legal. Whether it's drug testing, DMV records, or a credit check, the most professional of background screening companies would never place the client in a potentially dangerous, or liable, situation.
