Caregiver Background Screening:

Any Home Caregiver or Nurse Must Be Screened

The Philadelphia news has been flooded this week with articles about Antoinette Colclough, the home caregiver who stole the identity of her quadrepalegic patient. For the vulnerable populations that require constant medical care, background screening is an absolute must in order to protect them from an unscrupulous employee.

Colclough had been subject to a cheap background check, which turned up no data because her many other infractions were all "pending" with the law. As a result she was placed as the primary home caregiver and nurse of a woman who suffered from MS, and she proceeded to rack up $14,000 in debt in her patient's name.

Stories abound with similar accusations; in New York a male nurse in a retirement facility sexually assaults a 90 year old woman. In another case, a Stockton caregiver was sentenced to four years in state prison for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from a 92-year-old woman who had given her power of attorney.

In all 3 of these cases, background screening would have revealed the criminal history that each nurse and caregiver was hiding.

The problem is that too many nurse and caregiver agencies don't require real background screening. They simply rely on a cheap background check, or a cursory glance at criminal records, and hire potentially dangerous individuals to care for a vulnerable population.

As it says at recordnet.com, "there are fewer restrictions on people opening a carwash or salon than for those overseeing people who care for the aged or infirm."

Real background screening includes pre employment drug testing and random drug testing to help rule-out the theft of important medications or pain killers. A credit check can reveal an individual with a history of financial problems. A social security trace will make sure that potential employees are who they say they are, and a criminal records search along local, state, and federal levels will find convictions of any kind, committed anywhere.

These kinds of crimes, perpetrated against innocent individuals who must place their health in the hands of an employee, are horrible. But they are just as easily prevented with quality background investigations.
