Lack of Background Checks:

Sabotages Workplace Safety

Because the state of Washington doesn't require employment background screening, drug testing, or even a cheap background check, an innocent man may have been killed in a preventable workplace accident.

The horrible crane accident that occurred in Washington last Thursday, where a 210-foot-high crane crashed into the city of Bellevue, killed a young lawyer and destroyed or damaged 3 buildings. It was manned by an operator with at least six drug convictions.

Of course, a cheap background check might have uncovered his history (if all of the records are in the right place), but would not have included the option of employee drug testing, one of the single most important facets of employment background screening today.

It's bad enough that the state doesn't require them, but in terms of workplace safety such a risk is easily not worth taking. Construction is known to be one of the most dangerous lines of work in America, and to trust a 210-foot-high crane to just anyone is risking the lives of co-workers, or in this case, innocent bystanders.

The odds simply demand drug testing: Statistically, 40 percent of individuals classified as drug addicts or alcoholics are still getting hired by perfectly respectable companies. This means that there are 26 million people in the workplace who are legally impaired every day.

These individuals are more likely to cause accidents, and to accrue costs due to absenteeism, healthcare costs, and worker's comp claims.

Instituting pre-employment drug testing, random drug testing, and post-accident drug testing will keep drug abusers out of your workplace, and remove those who only stayed sober long enough to pass a basic pre-employment screening.

None of which comes with a cheap background check.

Here again is why there really isn't a substitute for thorough employment background screening. Establishing these kinds of workplace safety procedures saves money, and even better, saves lives.
