Background Screening Standards:
Far Superior To the Cheap Background Check
In Connecticut, a tragedy involving a school-bus driver under the influence of drugs could have been avoided if background screening had been a part of the hiring process in West Hartford. "Tougher standards" for bus drivers are called for, but hanging on to a cheap background check isn't going to keep inebriated or otherwise dangerous drivers from getting hired.
At journalinquirer.com, the incident in question reflects the tremendous difference between a quick public records search, and thorough pre employment screening. The school-bus driver in question had a criminal record, and was under the influence of cocaine when he struck and killed a pedestrian.
The driver had actually passed a cheap background check, which turned up no criminal record. However, he did have was a pending felony narcotics charge, as well as a conviction for 2 misdemeanors. This information turned up too late to revoke his license before he could kill a pedestrian, a casualty of the notoriously poor background check system.
Thorough background screening would have turned up all of this information, quickly, and well before he got behind the wheel.
And it isn't likely that the driver, working under the influence of cocaine, would have passed a comprehensive battery of drug testing. Pre employment drug testing is a must, but in cases like these it's random drug testing and post-accident drug testing that reveals the dangerous employees in the workforce. Anyone can stay sober long enough to pass one test, but with real background screening employers have the option to keep a closer watch on someone who could pose a threat, as was the case here.
Of course, no drug testing is included in a cheap background check.
Stricter measures are indeed required in cases like these, particularly when vulnerable populations are at risk. But, until the school district implements thorough background screening they will continue to take the kind of hiring risks associated with inadequate, cheap background checks.
