Employee Drug Testing:
How Background Screening Programs Have Given Workplace Safety a Boost
Workplace safety has proven more difficult to maintain than had been previously thought, as OSHA inspection policies come under fire for failing to prevent serious accidents on the job. But in order to prevent the most avoidable workplace accidents employers need to add background screening programs to their standard OSHA compliance, particularly in terms of employee drug testing.
According to the mailtribune.com, OSHA failed to inspect plants with enough care and frequency to prevent an accident like the 2005 explosion at BP's Texas City refinery that killed 15 people and injured 170, the worst U.S. industrial accident since 1990.
But while this tragedy has gained nationwide attention, workplace accidents are actually down across the country, thanks in part to OSHA regulations, alongside another major factor.
Namely, that would be employee drug testing.
Employee drug testing as it's been implemented through quality background screening has influenced and nurtured workplace safety by controlling and limiting the incidents of accidents and outright violence in the workplace.
According to results of a NIDA-sponsored survey, drug-using employees are 2.2 times more likely to request early dismissal or time off, 2.5 times more likely to have absences of eight days or more, 3 times more likely to be late for work, 3.6 times more likely to be involved in a workplace accident, and 5 times more likely to file a workers compensation claim.
Whenever someone is using drugs on the job, workplace safety is at risk. Those employers who have implemented employee drug testing, and particularly random drug testing alongside their standard background screening procedures have seen a dramatic drop in accidents, altercations, and claims.
By limiting the kind of day-to-day dangers that come with drug use on the job, employers and managers can devote more time to the prevention of the kind of catastrophic disaster that happened at BP's refinery.
