Pre Employment Background Screening:

Drug Testing and DMV Driving Records Could Save Lives

Pre employment background screening could serve to control and perhaps even reverse the rising number of workplace accidents and deaths on the road. However, in order to achieve this, drug testing and a DMV driving records search should be included alongside traditional criminal background checks to keep dangerous individuals from getting behind the wheel.

At dallasnews.com, the 2004 tragedy in which a truck driver plowed his 18-wheeler into a line cars, killing one person and injuring many more, is used to remind us that auto accidents are the second most likely cause of death on-the-job. This situation is made much worse by the fact that many of these employees could have been effectively weeded out of the workplace if their employers had relied on a quality pre employment background screening program.

The article quotes that "of 953 truckers faulted in fatal crashes from 2000 to 2005...at least one in four had been convicted of a criminal offense." More than 14% had committed drug or alcohol offenses, and more than 1 in 10 were actual felons.

That's 25% of behind-the-wheel employees who could be risking their lives and the lives of any innocent bystanders every time they go to work.

More than 5,000 people die every year in these accidents, most of them in passenger cars that were unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Another 116,000 are injured yearly in truck-related accidents, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Pre employment background screening could go a long way in saving the lives of both drivers and innocent bystanders. By implementing drug testing before hiring, and maintaining a random drug testing policy, those employees tempted to work under the influence could be eliminated. A DMV driving records check could further reveal important information, such as infractions that a potential hire still has on record, drunk driving issues, and even the number of years a potential employee has been licensed to drive a commercial vehicle.

A criminal background check should be standard as well, though sadly not even this basic method of screening is regularly used for the hiring of behind-the-wheel employees.

It can't be a coincidence that the second leading cause of fatality on the job - death on the highway - accompanies a line of work infamous for skipping out on background screening procedures. By relying on screening to control who does and doesn't get behind the wheel, managers and employers could, quite honestly, save thousands of lives.
