Workplace Safety Starts in the Hiring Process
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, almost 6,000 employees die every year in the workplace. Around 600 of them die due to targeted workplace violence, at the hands of an employee who means to kill them. That’s right, they’re murdered by another employee. Many others die inadvertantly as a result of another employee’s mistake on the job. Managers and Supervisors, it is suggested, should conduct thorough background screening on all potential hires, including drug testing.
Employee Drug Testing Needed for Dangerous Jobs
We now know that employees who abuse drugs and/or alcohol show 3 times more absenteeism on the job, are more likely to steal to feed their habit, are more likely to injure themselves or someone else at work, and are 5 times more likely to file a workers compensation claim when that injury occurs. Employee drug testing reduces the likelihood of such incidents but up to 90% .
EBI Makes Employee Background Screening Even More Efficient
In an effort to make Form I-9 compliance even easier to attain, EBI has made Form I-9 processing paperless. That’s correct – there won’t be tons of paperwork to fill out, or multiple copies to handle and process before a client can verify and hire their employee. EBI knows that pre-employment background screening needs to be fast, thorough, and efficient in order to facilitate the employer’s needs. This new paperless model of I-9 compliance will fulfill all of that criteria.
International Background Checks Help Fight Terrorism
With the recently publicized employment background screening that has been applied to port workers around the country, more and more, international background checks are coming to be an integral means to fight terrorism. So why is it that less than 50% conduct background checks on applicants from other countries? This seems a surprising result, given the increasing focus on globalization and terrorism concerns.
Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Still Threatening Workplace Safety
Though public awareness of alcoholism and substance abuse has increased over the years, according to a study newly published by the U.S. Department of Labor, workplace alcohol use and impairment still affects an estimated 15 percent of the U.S. workforce, or 19.2 million workers. The only proven means of limiting injury and accidents related to alcohol use and substance abuse is employee drug testing and alcohol screening.
