Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Still Threatening Workplace Safety:

Absenteeism, Accidents, Illness and Mortality.

Though public awareness of alcoholism and substance abuse has increased over the years, according to a study newly published by the U.S. Department of Labor, workplace alcohol use and impairment still affects an estimated 15% of the U.S. workforce, or 19.2 million workers.

Furthermore, an estimated 2.1 million workers (1.7% of the workforce) worked last year under the influence of alcohol, and 11.6 million workers (9.2% of the workforce) worked with a hangover.

While alcoholism and substance abuse certainly lower productivity on the job, the bigger issue here is workplace safety. Drug and alcohol abuse result in higher rates of absenteeism, accidents, illness and mortality, with all their related costs. Employees who suffer from substance abuse problems are more likely to injure themselves or others, and 5 times more likely to file a workers compensation claim after that injury.

In fact, in many workplaces, 20 to 25% of accidents at work involve intoxicated people injuring themselves and innocent victims.

The only proven means of limiting injury and accidents related to alcohol use and substance abuse is employee drug testing and alcohol screening.

But simply relying on pre-employment drug testing is not enough to positively impact workplace safety. Anyone can stay sober long enough to pass such a test, and alcohol and many drugs pass out of the body’s system in 48 hours.

This is why incorporating random drug testing and post-accident drug testing is still the best way to go. Clearly alcoholism and substance abuse on-the-job is still a problem, and it doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon.
