Workplace Safety and Background Screening

Construction among Fields of Work that Most Needs Background Screening
September 2007

While background screening is a necessary step to manage workplace safety in all fields of work, some jobs require it more than others, and construction is definitely at the top of that list.

Working in construction is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States. OSHA's accident statistics reveal that workers in the building industry are 6 times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than in any other industry. Two people are killed every week in a building site accident, and many of the incidents were preventable.

How so? With continual and updated background screening procedures.

Background screening has been embraced by many companies and business owners as a pre-hire formality that keeps dangerous or unwanted employees off the job, and offers an immediate boost for workplace safety. But, when it comes to more dangerous lines of work, continual screening in the form of drug testing can reduce preventable accidents drastically.

Statistically around 20% of any given workforce are abusing drugs or alcohol on the job, and it's a frightening truth, but staying sober long enough to pass one pre-hire drug test is easy enough for many dangerous employees to get hired when they shouldn't.

Furthermore, too many employers are content to rely on a cheap background check, which doesn't include any drug testing, and likely offers a simple, cursory glance at public records.

This is simply too dangerous to allow in a field of work that involves heavy machinery and potentially dangerous chemicals such as those often handled at a construction site. At the same time, workplace safety must be balanced with the kinds of moral and legal rights that all employees deserve in any workplace.

It's for this reason that Contractor Mag suggests that employment screening is a field "where a contractor should get professional advice from the best sources to make sure that the proper procedures are in place, and that the employer, customer and employee are all treated fairly."
