Workplace Safety and Background Screening
Construction among Fields of Work that Most Needs Background Screening
September 2007
The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Statistics reported this week on work related injuries and deaths in 2006 all over the United States. And while there was a slight drop in these accidents some parts of the country, the slight rise that occurred in other parts of the country prove that workplace safety measures still call for quality background screening procedures.
For example, while California experienced a small drop in workplace incidents, in Pennsylvania fatal work-related injuries rose 7%. The Department of Labor said the total was the highest number in the state since 1997, with the most frequent type of job-related death starting with highway crashes, followed by falls, being struck by an object, and even homicides.
And Pennsylvania isn't the only state experiencing this rise in workplace injuries.
How might background screening prevent such incidents? A major aspect of pre-hire screening is to remove those potential employees who would constitute a threat to workplace safety. The fastest and most effective means of limiting injuries and fatalities on the job is to institute employee drug testing, and to follow it up with random drug testing and post-accident drug testing. This method has been proven to minimize workplace accidents dramatically, since those employees who use drugs on the job are far more likely to hurt themselves or someone else.
And other background screening tools, like the DMV records check or the reference and education check, help managers and business owners make sure that only the safest and most qualified employees can operate machinery or get behind the wheel.
It's certainly true that many of these accidents could not have been prevented, but it is also likely true that many of them could, which is why properly screening employees should be every company's first priority.
