Unfortunately, the superficial nature of these quick checks won't provide employers with the kind of information they truly need to protect their workplace environment. For less than $12 anyone can now perform an instant online background check in Montana, a new service that would potentially save employers a great deal of both time and money. But, as well-meaning as such a service is, it's dangerous to assume that the information gleaned from a cheap background check could ever equal the information gathered through quality background screening. Why? For starters, this new service will only offer checks on a local and state level. But with as many as 30% of offenders being multi-state, meaning having a criminal record in either more than one state or in a different state, this kind of background investigation won't turn up a lot of potentially dangerous information. On the other hand, true background screening covers a criminal records check on local, state, and national levels, ensuring a more accurate representation of someones criminal history. And, while the new services offered in Montana do ask for a social security number, they don't offer a social security trace, which is crucial in today's age of rampant identity theft. Without such services, a large percentage of ex-offenders could easily find their way into unsuspecting workplaces.
