Why the Social Security Number Search Continues to be a Necessity
January 2008

This week's incident in San Antonio, Texas, where a carnival worker was arrested on the grounds of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo for possession of child pornography, reveals how important it is that the social security number search occupy center stage in quality background screening procedures.

The man in question had passed a background check, but he had lied about who he was, allowing him to slip past a simple check into a workplace frequented by children.

How did he do it? By stealing his own brother's identity, including his brother's birth certificate and identification.

And this is by far a very common problem in background screening today. In Chicago the bust of an illegal document ring that created up to 100 fake Social Security cards a day has led to a proposal of legislation that would update the Social Security card for the age of cyber crime.

To many employers the social security number search appears to be simple means of weeding out illegal immigrants, and many managers and employers may not feel they need such a service.

But as the situation in San Antonio reveals, the social security number search does much more than that. It's simply too easy today for a dangerous person, or simply someone with something to hide, to obtain the kind of documents that could allow them to enter an unsuspecting workplace environment.

As is the case here at EBI, the best background screening agencies will see social security screening as an important first step towards the proper investigation of any potential hire.
