Social Security Check

Becomes Standard Background Screening Procedure
August 2007

In a new effort to crack down in illegal immigrants, and in response to the recently failed bill regarding the legalization of immigrant workers, federal authorities are expected to enforce tougher rules of employment this week that will make a social security check the new standard in background screening.

At the New York Times, Homeland Security officials "are signaling that they intend to clamp down on employers of illegal immigrants" by enforcing newer and more aggressive rules that would ban the employment of any employee with a false social security number. For decades employers have paid little or no attention to "no-match letters" from the Social Security Administration that workers' names and numbers did not match the agency's records.

But now, with $10,000 fines for those who knowingly hire illegal aliens, and workplace raids on the horizon, it's likely that the social security check will become a primary focus of background screening procedures.

Of course, here at EBI the social security check has always been on the front line of background screening procedures because it is one of the fastest ways to verify the identity of a potential hire. Social security fraud is a very common problem, and it is important to keep in mind in any hiring situation, especially when screening against criminal records. In fact, we recommend the social security check as the first step in any background screening process.

And while social security screening is making social and political waves in terms of the hiring of illegal immigrants, one thing is certain, using it to ascertain the identity of a potential hire, as well as past legal infractions and instances of dishonesty in the hiring process can only help to ensure a safer workplace.
