Random Drug Testing

Causes Uproar in Schools
June, 2007

Earlier this month a North Carolina elementary school art teacher was caught attempting to use heroin in the classroom. In response to this shocking and dangerous revelation, schools across America are looking to implement random drug testing of all staff in order to better protect their children.

And it's causing quite an uproar. In Graham County, North Carolina, a state teacher's group has sued the Graham County school system, a move that could block the system's plans to randomly drug test all employees beginning in July. The suit states that the drug testing policy violates state constitutional principles against discrimination and searches without evidence.

Meanwhile, a Honolulu teacher received 4 years in prison for drug-related charges, and since October, at least four other public school teachers have been arrested on drug-related charges.

And in New Iberia Louisiana, The St. Mary Parish School Board recently made news when it approved changes to its drug-free policy, now including random drug testing of all safety-sensitive employees, including food services, transportation, custodial and technology employees.

Random drug testing is, in actuality, the most effective form of employee drug testing out there. Let's face it; anyone can stay sober long enough to pass a single, pre-employment test. But random employee drug testing ensures that a hidden problem, or perhaps a new one, doesn't find its way into the workplace, and in this case, endanger innocent people.

It's unclear how the lawsuits will be resolved, but by implementing random drug testing each school board is doing exactly what it should be doing to keep the use of illicit drugs away from children at school.
