Background Screening

Faces Dangerous Alternatives Online

At a Washington City Paper blog, one post details a "quick and dirty background check" that revealed a criminal history in someone who had potentially had access to homes. And while perusing public records in that kind of situation might be acceptable, too many employers searching for a cheap shortcut are relying on dangerous substitutes instead of quality background screening.

The problem isn't just one of public records, though those too are questionable in the least. No, the most dangerous threat to true background screening procedures is coming from employers who think that if they simply Google a would-be hire, they'll know all they need to know. Not only is such information clearly inadequate, it's simply not going to provide a true picture of the employee.

But going with the average public records search isn't appropriate either, though too many employers seem to think so. Certainly it's cheaper, but too often public records are out of date, poorly organized, and hard to understand. Some are even plain false, or don't apply to any records outside of that particular jurisdiction. If your potential employee has a criminal record in another state, a "quick and dirty" public records search online won't turn up such information.

In reality, there isn't really a substitute for quality background screening services in the workplace. By properly screening employees, managers and employers can implement drug testing, criminal records searches on all levels, resume checks, and even a credit check for employees that will have access to financial or personal data.

An estimated 30% of failed businesses didn't survive because of poor hiring choices. By relying on real background screening, instead of quick online substitutes, business owners can make sure that theirs isn't one of them.
