Public School Background Screening
Why Background Screening Is So Necessary In Today's Public School System
October 2007
The public school system is in dire need of more stringent background screening, as is evident in the local headlines making news for the last week. With issues ranging from sexual abuse to drug abuse, tools like resume checks, criminal background checks, and employee drug testing are in short supply where we need them most.
In Iowa, more than 2 dozen teachers, coaches and public school administrators between 2001 through 2005 were caught in inappropriate relationships with students, including showing youngsters pornography and having sex with them. According to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners, teacher sexual misconduct with students is an issue state education officials regularly face.
In California, identical twin teachers were suspended from Adelanto schools after officials discovered that they're facing child sex abuse charges in another district. Both had passed preliminary background screening by doctoring their applications.
And the public school system in New Mexico was shocked to discover that one of their youth coaches had an outstanding warrant and a history of drug abuse and drug related charges. Employee drug testing was not performed, though the employee did pass local background screening.
How are these incredible infractions slipping past and allowing dangerous individuals to work with kids in public school systems nationwide? Again and again, the issue is inadequate background screening.
In every case, the individuals in question were subject to quick, cheap, local background checks, not the quality screening that such a job requires. As a result, inappropriate and downright dangerous people were granted access to children.
Whether it's drug testing, resume checks, or nationwide criminal background screening, today's schools can't afford not to rely on in-depth screening to protect American children.
