Background Screening and Employee Drug Testing
Protect Workplace Security
August 2007
At the Post-Gazette Business News website, issues of workplace security are addressed alongside background screening procedures, such as employee drug testing and credit checks, which could keep threats that appear from within the company at a minimum.
According to the article, there are several different forms of danger that employees could pose in the workplace. Information technology employees "represent one of the greatest security risks," particularly if they work off hours in restricted-access settings. Alongside them are financial and accounting employees who have access to company money.
The first and most important means of protecting the business from employees that have access to sensitive materials is to conduct very extensive background screening; "before making a hire, companies should conduct an employee screening that includes prior references, a criminal background check and a credit check."
But the next biggest threat to the integrity and safety of the workplace is the one that too many employers don't see coming: the employees with a drug problem. It makes sense that employees who handle dangerous machinery are a threat if they're under the influence on the job, but employees who use drugs in the workplace are also more likely to steal in order to sustain their addictions. And this is all before you take into account the fact that these same employees are 3 times more likely to injure themselves or others, and 5 times more likely to file a claim when they do so.
Which is why employee drug screening is such an important factor in pre-hire background screening. The right kind of employee drug testing should take place not only before the actual hire, but randomly throughout employment as well, as a means of minimizing the overall danger of drug use in the workplace.
And finally, the right kind of pre-employment screening will certify that all information sent to clients will comply with applicable federal, state and local privacy, EEO, consumer reporting, etc. laws. By maintaining these kinds of standards with every potential employee, workplace "security threats" will quickly become a thing of the past.
