Why Airport Security Still Needs Background Screening
October 2007

Newark Liberty International Airport was shocked this week to discover that airport security had failed to screen out an employee with ties to illegal activities and terrorist organizations. This frightening revelation proves that in order to maintain Patriot Act compliance, background screening is still of crucial importance for any employer.

The man in question was originally arrested along with a half-dozen other men for looting ATM machines in Manhattan. But worse than this, authorities say the suspects are part of a global identity theft ring linked to the Tamil Tigers, a terrorist group. How could this man, who came to the U.S. with a fake passport, find employment in an airport in a post-911 world?

The answer is simple: only superficial background screening procedures were employed in a half-hearted attempt towards Patriot Act compliance. Commenting on modern airport security, Senator Chuck Schumer claims that "They are letting all of these security companies do these very, very cursory background checks, and they're not thorough and they don't do the job."

And the GAO (Government and Accountability Office) released a study on airport security just this week, suggesting that Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration have, "Generally not achieved" measures of safety when it comes to seven areas of security.

Patriot Act compliance, as quoted from the Act itself, is designed for "uniting and strengthening America by providing appropriate tools required to intercept and obstruct terrorism." Sadly, too many companies are either paying simple lip service to such commandments, or not fulfilling them at all.

Which is why background screening is still of ultimate importance for any company seeking to maintain any Homeland Security compliance. Quality screening protects employers from unknowingly hiring a dangerous individual, and includes blocking interaction with terrorists, international narcotics traffickers and proscribed weapons violators, among others.
