Incorporating Employee Drug Testing as Part of Ongoing Background Screening Cuts Worker's Comp Claims by 64%
November 2007
In Arkansas next month, the Bella Vista Property Owners Association will be honored for its achievements, after having logged more than 1 million hours without a lost-time accident. How did they manage such a cost efficient means of workplace safety? By implementing employee drug testing into their background screening policy, as well as maintaining testing on a regular basis.
POA's achievement is a great one, but it's not something out of reach for any workplace environment. In fact, by implementing different forms of employee drug testing any manager or business owner can minimize accidents, worker's comp claims, absenteeism, and high turnover. According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, companies that engaged in random drug testing in combination with pre-employment testing reduced their mean workers' compensation claims per 100 employees per year by 63.7% over a 4-year period, while the "control group" of employers (employers not conducting drug testing), experienced a 19% increase during that same time period.
In other words, thanks to quality background screening procedures like pre-hire and random employee drug testing, those companies enjoyed a dramatic drop in worker's comp claims, while everyone else had to pay more.
Statistically, an employee who uses drugs or alcohol on the job is 3 times more likely to injure them self or another employee, and 5 times more likely to file a worker's comp claim when they do so.
And with 12.4 million working drug users, and who knows how many millions drinking on the job, that adds up to billions of dollars per year that employers have to pay for employees who come to work when they have no business doing so.
This is why smart business owners, like the POA, rely on background screening and employee drug testing to minimize costs and maximize productivity. By spending a little extra time and money on a drug-free workplace, they save a lot more money and trouble in the long run.
