Drug Testing:
How Background Screening Has Helped in the Fight Against Methamphetamine Addiction
In the last 10 years methamphetamine addiction has devastated homes, communities, and workplaces. But according to new data, the drug testing policies that many employers have instituted as part of their background screening process has been integral in recognizing the scope of meth abuse, as well as the danger it poses to society.
At Southwest Nebraska News, All Positive Options, an organization involved in addiction and recovery, will launch a new on-line resource called The International Collaboration on Methamphetamine, on April 30th, 2007. According to Jim Stephens, the company spokesperson, "While this initiative is international in scope, the primary purpose is to create a common platform and solution exchange for stakeholders in the meth issue at the individual community level. That's who benefits the most, because that's where the destructive effects of all drugs are most keenly felt."
And methamphetamine addiction is indeed an issue with lasting ramifications. Believed to be one of the most addictive drugs available today, the cheap nature of meth makes it a danger in every community, leading to spikes in crimes of all kinds and the total devastation of the individual suffering from meth addiction.
But recently one of the places where meth abuse has been most problematic, namely the workplace, has seen a drop in its use. Why?
Background screening and random drug testing.
Thanks to pre employment drug testing, random drug testing, and post accident drug testing, methamphetamine use in the workplace fell by 72% last year.
With an estimated 20% of the workplace population using alcohol or drugs on-the-job on any given day, background screening is a useful way to test the prevalence of drug abuse in the general, working population. And by preventing workers from using the drug, many working Americans are less likely to get involved with it.
Methamphetamine addiction is all-consuming, and creates dangerous, unstable employees who are much more likely to injure themselves or others, and to file workers comp claims for the injuries they sustain. With 7.4 million employees abusing drugs on-the-job, background screening not only protects the employer, but maintains the health and morale of all employees.
And it gets the message out to all members of society that meth abuse is dangerous, costly, and totally unacceptable.
