Full Background Screening

Required For Medical Care Facilities
July 2007

The Delaware Psychiatric Center learned the hard way this week that all medical care facilities should implement full background screening, not just drug testing and cheap criminal background checks, in order to protect the health and well-being of their patients.

According to Delaware Online, at the psychiatric center, one of their recent hires was previously arrested in 2004 for "for selling Ketamine, a powerful tranquilizer sometimes used as a date-rape drug, to an undercover detective."

After pleading guilty, the would-be anesthesiologist was sentenced to two months in jail and then placed on probation until 2010, according to court records. The Pennsylvania state medical board automatically suspended his medical license because he was "convicted of felonies under the Controlled Substance Drug Device and Cosmetic Act."

But on July 1st he was once again in charge of vulnerable populations of people, and given access to powerful medications used to treat everything from anxiety, to schizophrenia. The psychiatric institution in question claims to have implemented a standard background check, but with public records as poorly kept as they are, it's no surprise that pertinent information never found its way to the proper authorities.

Here again is why quality background screening is so much more important, and effective, for any medical care facility or institution. A cheap background check doesn't cover things like resume checks, education verification, random drug testing, and criminal records checks on local, state, and federal levels.

By relying on quality background screening procedures, managers and employers of all long-term care facilities and medical institutions can rest assured that they're doing everything possible to protect the vulnerable populations who rely on them on a daily basis.
