Free Background Checks

Opening the Door For Danger
February 2008

WINK News ran an article this week about the use of free background checks, a background screening methodology that is too often used in place of quality screening in the workplace.

According to the article, free background checks are an acceptable means of screening individuals when the data comes "from publicly available government records and commercial sources."

Unfortunately, the article says nothing about the many drawbacks of relying on this means of screening.

Free background checks are tempting because they don't cost anything, but what most employers don't realize is that public records are poorly organized from state to state. Too often, disorganized or simply false information is found to provide skewed results. In some cases, perfectly innocent people are unable to get the job they want because free background checks so often provide faulty information. Worse yet, stories abound of dangerous employees with criminal histories slipping into the workplace because a cursory glance at public records didn't reveal their criminal history.

Quality background screening isn't free, but it is thorough, reliable, and indispensable in today's workplace. With background screening employers and managers stand to benefit from tools like the social security check to make sure that documents provided are real, resume checks to verify resume information, criminal records checks on local, state, and nationwide levels, and employee drug testing for the pre-hiring process, and randomly to prevent inappropriate and dangerous behavior on the job.

This offers a means of screening employees that provides trustworthy results, minimizing danger to the workplace, to clients, to other employees, and to the business as a whole when negligent hiring lawsuits become an issue.
