Employee Drug Testing
It's Up, But Random Drug Testing is Still Needed May, 2007
As it says at starnewsonline.com, there's no shortage of reasons why employee drug testing is important for workplace safety. However, while screening employees before they enter the workplace is important, random drug testing is still an underutilized method of background screening that could save almost every employer thousands of dollars.
Statistically, more than 3/4 of the 14.8 million drug users in America have jobs. This means that the odds of one not working in your workplace are pretty low, and they are most certainly costing money by lowering morale, lost productivity, and even by causing accidents on the job.
Thankfully quality employee drug testing can help pinpoint who those people are.
But unfortunately too many employers and managers fail to realize the importance of random drug testing. Let's face it: almost anyone can stay sober long enough to pass one test. As it says in the article, "almost 6% of all employees screened and 4 % of job applicants typically test positive" when subject to random drug testing.
By being lax in terms of random drug testing, employers are actually costing themselves a great deal of money. Drug users are almost 4 times as likely to be involved in a workplace accident as sober workers, and 5 times as likely to file a workers' compensation claim. By keeping drug use out of the workplace entirely employers and managers can save themselves thousands of dollars a year.
This is why employee drug testing – including pre-hire, random drug testing, and even post-accident drug testing – are always offered as part of EBIs background screening policies.
