Workplace Safety
Employee Drug Testing Saving Lives and Protecting Business
September 2007
In both Wyoming and Virginia, workplace safety is on the rise, as each state reveals data that injuries on-the-job declined in 2006. And while this is great news, it's important to remember that the vast majority of workplace accidents that are still happening are entirely preventable with the implementation background screening and employee drug testing.
The Wyoming Department of Employment says Wyoming had its steepest decline in job-related deaths in 13 years last year. The number of workplace deaths in the state fell from 46 in 2005 to 36 in 2006.
And in Virginia, The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry reported that workplace fatalities were down 12% in 2006 from the previous year. The department reported 164 deaths in 2006, compared to 186 deaths in 2005.
This is great news, but for employers it is important to remember that in many states, workplace accidents are not going down. And those stubborn accidents that do still occur almost always occur in the same ways and are to be blamed on the same dangerous factors. In fact, on-the-job deaths due to contact with equipment and objects accounted for 23% of deaths last year, closely followed by transportation accidents, falls, and even workplace violence.
This is why true workplace safety is always an ongoing process that requires preliminary background screening as well as regular fine tuning. And no practice is better at fostering workplace safety than employee drug testing.
Employee drug testing, performed both as a pre-hire requirement and as an ongoing process via random drug testing, can serve to contain workplace accidents in any field or circumstances.
Though, it's particularly useful in terms of construction or mining, areas where workplace accidents are still common, preventable, and often devastating.
