Employee Drug Testing
Why Are So Many Failing This Important Component of Employment Background Screening?
December 2007
According to the Danville Register, there's a simple test that too many would-be employees are failing these days when they seek to satisfy employment background screening: the drug test.
And it isn't just Danville that's been recently forced to confront this issue. According to Danville's director of Economic Development this is "a national problem, and it's one of the top issues we've got to get hold of - having a workforce that's drug-free."
More and more these days employee drug testing has simply become part of the professional landscape; nowadays it's as common a part of employment background screening as the criminal check and resume check.
So why are so many people still failing?
Many people don't know or don't believe that they will have to pass a drug test before they're hired. And there's also a significant group who don't accept that fact that they have a drug problem, even when they fail employee drug testing.
And even when potential employees pass the test and are hired, there are many more who continue to abuse drugs on the job. After all, it isn't difficult to stay sober long enough to pass one test. This is why random drug testing is also gaining steam as a functional component of employment background screening, employers are figuring out that to have a drug-free workplace, the single pre-employment test simply isn't enough.
Without such testing, the potential dangers to any workplace are unthinkable. According to Kim Adkins, executive director of the West Piedmont Workforce Investment Board, "In focus groups, employers have indicated that 50 to 80 percent of applicants fail drug tests."
Such numbers represent hundreds and hundreds of potential employees who only fail to get hired because they failed employee drug testing. Otherwise, these people would have represented a huge boom in workplace accidents, lowered productivity, lowered morale, higher turnover, and increased workers' comp claims.
Which is why, once again, drug testing is an absolute necessity in the modern, safety conscious workforce.
