Employee Credit Check:
How Background Screening Can Prevent Identity Fraud
A 2007 Identity Fraud Survey Report has found a 12% drop in the amount of money consumers lost as a result if identity theft last year. While this drop is certainly good news, employers still need to implement an employee credit check as part of their employment background screening process, since a great deal of this fraud can be linked to employee theft.
In a study of the prevalence and causes of identity fraud, 70% of the cases that were scrutinized were linked to the employee theft of sensitive data from inside a company.
As it says at searchsecurity.com, "intellectual property and other sensitive consumer data are seeping out the doors of corporations at an alarming rate."
This is because in today's age, personal information can be as lucrative as plain old cash. Whether it's standard identity fraud (when a person's data is wrongfully used), or even selling the data to someone who plans to misuse it, employee theft of personal information is on the rise. And, as sensitive personal information becomes available to more and more employees, the temptation to misuse it will only grow.
One potential solution is to institute an employee credit check as part of standard employment background screening. While it is often overlooked, an employee credit check can reveal an individual with financial problems, including multiple bankruptcies. These employees are more likely to be tempted by employee theft.
Of course, a standard criminal background check will reveal if someone has a history of identity fraud, check fraud, or other "white collar crime." But employment background screening ought to cover all the bases, and provide as much protection as possible to employers and managers seeking to protect their company, and their clients.
